Specialized Family Type Services was opened for children with disabilities in Kutaisi

The new, family-type of specialized services was opened in Kutaisi by the Ministry of labor, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia with the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF) support. The new services was opened by the US Ambassador Ian Kelly, Minister of Labor, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia Davit Sergeenko, Kutaisi Mayor Shota Murgulia, USAID Mission Director Douglas Bowl and UNICEF representative in Georgia Laila Omar Gadi. Specialized family type services is the first community integrated service for children with severe and profound disabilities and health problems. Children, taken from the large state institutions, get here a 24-hour nursing care, rehabilitation, individual development and community integrating services. Family type specialized services for children was opened in the framework of child protection 5 year project of the USAID for children with severe disabilities, that has been launched since 2015 by UNICEF. The aim of the project is to raise infants and children in the family environment, and deliver services for individual development. The establishment of such services will allow the Georgian government to expand alternative services for disabled children and gradually replace the institutional model of care for children. By the end of 2017, the second of this type of specialized services is scheduled to be opened in Tbilisi.
